The Jhoon Rhee Institute in Arlington, Virginia, is owned and operated by Barry Shackelford and Francis Pineda. Together, they have more than 50 years of Tae Kwon Do experience.

Teaching classes is the favorite part of the job for both Master Shackelford and Master Pineda. In fact, this love of instruction, and a dedication to our students, distinguishes all the members of our staff.

Ms. Rice caught the Tae Kwon Do bug early, after taking an initial class from Grand Master Jhoon Rhee during summer camp prior to entering third grade. The opportunity to take classes on a regular basis didn’t present itself until almost three decades later, though, when in 1997 she and her son began Tae Kwon Do lessons at the Jhoon Rhee studio in Annandale. She received her black belt in 2003. As an instructor, and a mom, Ms. Rice firmly believes that “the family that kicks together, sticks together,” and strongly encourages parents to join their children in training. She herself is the consummate Tae Kwon Do mom, supporting her son’s demo team events and participating with him in local and national tournaments. As a competitor, Ms. Rice consistently placed in the top three in national sparring competitions.

Our Approach
Based on the unique martial arts style and teaching strategies of Master Jhoon Rhee, the Father of American Tae Kwon Do, our instructional approach is the culmination of nearly half a century of ongoing development and refinement. As a result, ours is a truly proven system, a martial arts experience that has for decades provided fun, fitness, and self-defense ability. Just as important, we believe, our system develops skills that apply to life overall—enhancing confidence, focus, and discipline in ways that benefit our students in all their personal endeavors. At Jhoon Rhee Arlington, all of our martial arts staff members have received formal instructor certification from the Jhoon Rhee Institute, and all full-time staff members are CPR certified and have undergone criminal and child sex offender background checks.

Our Charitable Programs
We strongly believe that tying charity work to our martial arts training is vital to the type of martial artist we produce—well-rounded individuals who are shining examples of good citizenship, students who earn great grades in school, children who listen and are respectful to mom and dad. For this reason, and in order to give back to our community, we regularly conduct a number of charity events, in addition to donating trial programs and uniforms to support local fundraisers. Because most of our students are between the ages of 4 and 15, we choose to work with organizations that support children, so that our kids are able to help other kids. Some recent events include:

  • Honduras Shoe Drive
  • Back to School Supply Drive for Arlington County Public Schools
  • 2007 Cereal Drive for Arlington Food Assistance Center collecting over 500 boxes
  • Kick-A-Thon for Leukemia Lymphoma Society raising nearly $15,000
  • UNICEF Drive
  • Book Drive for the Reading Connection and Reach Out and Read
  • Silent Auction and Donations for the American Diabetes Association
  • Sponsor of the Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program providing toys and clothing to over 100 needy children in Arlington during the 2008 Holiday Season
  • 2009 Cereal Drive for Arlington Food Assistance Center collecting over 1500 boxes
  • 2009 Coat Drive collecting over 500 coats distributed to various agencies in Arlington County
  • Haiti Relief Effort collecting needed supplies for a local organization to ship to Haiti

Our Student Creed
To build true confidence, through strength in my body,
honesty in my heart, and knowledge in my mind.

To keep friendship with one another and to build a strong and happy community.

Never fight to achieve selfish ends, but to develop Might For Right!
